Memories

Memories of family and friends...

"I remember the house (your parents) lived in on Cornelius.  I remember it because it was a duplex but you couldn’t tell it was a duplex from the outside.  The stairs to the upstairs apartment were located in the bedroom closet.   It was a brick house with a white arch with 2 pillars on eth corner of Cornelius and 40th street.  Years later Pat lived three houses down from that house.” (Cherri Walker, 2011)

“Connie let me have a swim party at her house one time.  There was not even water in the pool.  I remember I had one of your swimming suits; it was a grey/silver mini skirt.  I asked her if I could have a party and she said yes.  I accidently poured the whole bottle of “shock” into the pool and your mom lost her mind because I was only supposed to put in a cap full….Ha ha ha she never told me it takes days for he pool to fill up either.”  (Cherri Walker, 2011)

Did my mom visit you when you had Jarrell?  “Oh yes! I called your mom from the hospital, and she kept asking me what I wanted.  I told her that all I wanted was a comb and brush because Jarrell had so much hair. She just laughed.  I remember her coming to the hospital with a like blue comb and brush set and a blue onesie that said it’s a boy!” (Cherri Walker, 2011)

“I remember being at Momma’s house and washing dishes one day.  She said something crazy to me and I flared my nose at her.  She looked at me and said “You know you shouldn’t do that cause you nose is going to stick like that, ugly…” (Cherri Walker, 2011)

“Why do you think I don’t answer my door or my phone?  It is for a reason, Connie taught me that….” (Cherri Walker, 2011)

“I remember the first Christmas after I had Jarrell, Connie told me: “You don’t get any more gifts…once you have a baby you don’t get nothing no more…” And I thought “Dang, I’m only 16 why can’t I get anymore gifts?” (Cherri Walker, 2011)

“I remember the day we were visiting and Connie was showing us that you could skip.  “My baby can skip.”  She had that big white throw rug, you tripped over it, and you cracked your head on the table in the living room.  Hahahahahahahaha.”  (Cherri Walker, 2011)

“I remember Connie followed Leona here from St. Louis.  I think she was a substitute teacher before she got a job at the Finance Center.  She was young, maybe 16 years old.  She lived with Leona and learned to clean house with the best of them…”  (Cherri Walker, 2011)

“Pat was Connie’s favorite aunt.  I didn’t know that they were so close in age.  Connie was born in 1945 and Pat was born in 1936.  Now it makes since…. Kind of like you and me.”  (Cherri Walker, 2011)

"I used to have the biggest crush on you daddy when I was young.... One day your mom said stop looking at my man..." (Cherri Walker, 2011)

"I'm late! but just wanting to share a memory I will never forget and appreciate about Connie. I remember I begged her to make that pan of Mac and Cheese she made at Christmas one year for my wedding and she kept telling me no Jeralin no.....But low and behold she came through for me big old pan of Mac and Chesse for my wedding! She surprised me! I will always remember that. Love you and miss you Connie!" (Jeralin Samuels, 2011)

"I was pretty young through Connie's late existence, I do remember getting in the gold Audi that she had with the pack of Kools by the console and getting fussed at (in a joking way) about why my mama is so mean. Lmbo!!!! I was only like 10!"  (Jarrell Walker, 2011)

“Your mom was funny, feisty, caring, and no nonsense.” (Lydia Randolph, 11/22/2011)

“One time I was over to the house and she said Lydia pick me up, you can carry me.  (She was already standing).  I said no I can't and before I knew it, she had jumped into my arms and I was carrying her a few paces.  She was light weight, literally. LOL” (Lydia Randolph, 11/22/2011)“ I tell this story often.  One summer when I was home from upward bound, you had a pool party.  I had just got my hair done and was on a date with Wayne.  Everyone was saying get in the pool Lydia.  I said no cause I couldn't swim.  I was standing on the side close to the deep end throwing the ball back in the pool when it came out.  Your mom came up to me and took my glasses off and pushed me in.  As I was going in I heard her laughing really hard.  I don't know how I got out of that pool alive, but I was mad and wanted to push her in, but I remembered the gun. LOL” (Lydia Randolph, 11/22/2011)

“ The most helpful time was when I was going through something at home or something.  I was in your room crying and she talked to me and told me that things would be ok.  Trouble doesn't last always and that God would see me through.  It was the same day that you asked me if you could pray for me.  I was really broken that day and you both really encouraged me.  I will never forget that.” (Lydia Randolph, 11/22/2011)

“I miss her some days.  This is all I have Sister.  I pray this helps with the good work you are providing for the girls.  Love you much.” (Lydia Randolph, 11/22/2011)
